I have never collected "Black Americana." ...Pearl,

I have never collected "Black Americana." I remember when I first came across some pieces in an antique shop in my early twenties I thought it quite bawdy and in such bad taste that I wondered why anyone would collect it. But then the other part of me felt a deep respect for it, too, because of what it represents: the suffering and hardship that Blacks went through due to slavery, segregation, prejudice.

Now I'm a 4th generation Mexican american nearing 40. I was in some antique stores last week and I felt somewhat the same feelings. I am drawn to these types of memorabilia, but I wouldn't actually collect it. (For one thing with 7 kids I don't collect much of anything!)

So it occurred to me that this stuff needs to be recorded for our posterity and never forgotten. I realized that I wanted to create a an online, visual collection. So I took photos of every piece I could find in several shops and now I want to find more.

I have begun a virtual museum.
http://blackamericanamuseum.blogspot.com

I am embedding your slideshow, though I would love to be able to save the photos in case you ever remove the slide show for some reason.

I would also love to see the rest of your collection!!! I think it is a shame that there are only, what, 2 black american museums and neither has their pieces on display on-line. The public needs to be able to view these.

Tahnks for sharing yours! I hope to hear from you.Susanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07451158788772700026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22068684.post-9855610418352342612009-01-12T21:59:00.000-06:002009-01-12T21:59:00.000-06:00your blog is very good......your blog is very good......goooooood girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08464853146888246329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22068684.post-71192930464144107982008-12-02T17:28:00.000-06:002008-12-02T17:28:00.000-06:00Hello, I'm Ronnie Phillips and I live in Lithonia ...Hello, I'm Ronnie Phillips and I live in Lithonia Ga. I have searched and searched, unable to remember the title, writer or the exact words. Tonight I've found it - thank you so much! You've no idea how happy you've made me. Its a real gem. The smaller one is supposed to be used for custards and quiche according to Kira's cook booklet. Her steamers were expensive and by the time I bought mine the plain one depicted in the photo was all that was left of her line.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07854516877296639085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22068684.post-82223810302022723322008-04-05T09:12:00.000-05:002008-04-05T09:12:00.000-05:00I met Ronnie in Orlando this past November 2007, w...I met Ronnie in Orlando this past November 2007, where he was showing in a juried show in Downtown Disney. His work is simply amazing - I bought a mixed media piece that I simply love, as well as a small photograph. We use it mainly to steam rice (it's the only way we cook rice), but we also have a copy of Kira's cookbook that came with the steam pot. We also have two more copies of the cookbook for our two grown children.

We're trying to find two more steam pots, but they're hard to find. Are you willing to sell the one shown here? We can be contacted at jcantu --at-- wolfenet --dot-- com

Thank you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22068684.post-1860661059064841322007-10-29T19:00:00.000-05:002007-10-29T19:00:00.000-05:00and to think, i believe that i own this treasure, ...and to think, i believe that i own this treasure, got your behind on the internet, brother, u r big, keep up the good work.

GAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22068684.post-58342674916692753772007-04-12T00:18:00.000-05:002007-04-12T00:18:00.000-05:00After reading this post, I remembered a postcard f...After reading this post, I remembered a postcard from when my brother went to the worlds fair in NY. You reminded me of my collection. I will do some research and see if any of them would be worth selling on e-bay for a few bucks. Most of what I have is much older, and from all over the world.
